Plot summary
A childhood accident left Leo without a voice, and by 2035 he tends bar in a Berlin club that Maksim owns. He is seeing Naadirah, a waitress there who needs money badly and says nothing about it. When a customer named Stuart harasses her, Leo hits him; a second fight with Stuart gets Leo fired. Naadirah goes silent, and Luba, who lives with her, will not help. Naadirah had written an address on his notepad, and Leo follows it into the city's underworld. Elsewhere, the American surgeons Cactus Bill and Duck keep a clinic off the books. Bill has pressed Maksim for forged papers so he can take his daughter Josie out of Berlin. Duck would rather stay and runs a cybernetic surgery business on the side.

- Duncan Jones wanted Sam Rockwell to reprise his Moon role in Mute in a cameo meant as an epilogue for the character, and planned Mute as the second film in a trilogy with Moon and an unannounced third.
- For Mute's music, Clint Mansell drew on New German Cinema directors such as Werner Herzog and Rainer Werner Fassbinder and the krautrock group Popul Vuh, and cited David Bowie's Berlin Trilogy (Bowie being director Duncan Jones's father) as a major influence.
