Plot summary
Abbey Tyler is a psychologist in Nome, Alaska, raising her children, Ashley and Ronnie, after the death of her husband Will. Her patients cannot sleep, and they describe the same thing: a white owl watching them through their windows, followed by creatures trying to get inside. Abbey puts them under hypnosis to recover what they cannot recall. Her colleague Abel Campos has hypnotized her too, hoping she might remember the night Will was murdered, and the session leaves her in tears without the face she is looking for. Campos urges her to rest, but she refuses. Her son Ronnie blames her for his father's murder, and her daughter Ashley went blind soon after it. One patient, Tommy Fisher, panics under hypnosis.

- To promote the film, Universal Pictures created a website with fake news stories supposedly taken from real Alaska newspapers, including the Nome Nugget. The newspapers sued, and Universal settled by agreeing to remove the stories and pay $20,000 to the Alaska Press Club and $2,500 to a Calista Corporation scholarship fund.
- The film is loosely inspired by real missing person cases along Alaska's Bering Strait, which did prompt an FBI investigation; while the film suggests extraterrestrial abduction, the real investigation found alcohol use and frigid temperatures to be the cause of most incidents. Nine individuals were never recovered.
- The Fourth Kind was shot in Bulgaria and Squamish, British Columbia, and its lush, mountainous Nome bears little resemblance to the actual Nome, Alaska, which sits at the fringes of the arctic tree line, where trees grow only about 8 ft tall because of the permafrost.
