Plot summary
In the Mississippi Delta, Henry McAllan is cheated out of renting a home and moves to a farm outside Marietta with his wife, Laura, and their daughters, along with his father, Pappy. The Jacksons, tenant farmer Hap, his wife Florence and their eldest son Ronsel, work the farm's cotton fields and hope to own land one day. When whooping cough strikes the McAllan girls, Florence tends them, and Laura later hires her to look after the children. A mule must be put down, and Henry offers to rent out his own in exchange for half the Jacksons' crop, which would reduce them to sharecroppers. Hap breaks his leg helping to build a church, and Laura sneaks money from Henry's safe so a doctor can treat him. As the war begins, Jamie McAllan and Ronsel leave to serve.

- At the 90th Academy Awards, where Mudbound earned four nominations, Mary J. Blige became the first person ever nominated for both acting and songwriting in the same year, for Best Supporting Actress and for the song "Mighty River".
- The same 90th Academy Awards nominations made Dee Rees the first African-American woman ever nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Rachel Morrison the first woman ever nominated for Best Cinematography.
- Heat and storms hit the shoot: cinematographer Rachel Morrison developed sun poisoning, a nearby tornado warning postponed filming, and rain forced a planned roadside scene between Ronsel and Jamie inside Jamie's pickup truck.
- The film's opening scene used artificial rain made by rain towers, while real rain was filmed for the wide shots.
