Plot summary
Jean Harris, a divorced mother of two, runs a private girls' school and has spent fourteen years in a relationship with Herman Tarnower, the cardiologist behind the Scarsdale Diet. He proposes, then withdraws, saying he does not want to raise her sons. He keeps her close anyway, prescribing medications she comes to depend on while he sees other women, among them Lynne Tryforos, his younger secretary-receptionist. On a stormy night in March 1980, Jean drives five hours from McLean, Virginia to his Purchase, New York estate, a gun in her handbag; she means to die beside his pond after confronting him. She takes the gun out and Tarnower reaches for it.
