Alan Stanford
Biography
Alan Stanford, an English-Irish actor, director and writer, has spent much of his career in Irish theater. Born in 1949, he began directing in Ireland at the Project Arts Centre, staging works by Shaw, Brecht, Shakespeare and others, and served as artistic director of the Second Age Theatre Company, where he directed King Lear, Othello and Macbeth. He was associated with Dublin's Gate Theatre for over thirty years as both actor and director, and his stage roles ranged from Shaw and Wilde to Ibsen and Ayckbourn. He won a Harveys Theatre Award for Best Actor playing Salieri in Amadeus and earned three further nominations. On screen he appeared in Moll Flanders (1996) and Animal Farm (1999), and for years he played George Manning in the Irish drama series Glenroe. He also directed for the Irish Theatre Company and later served as executive director of PICT Classic Theatre in Pittsburgh.

Beyond film
During the Gate Theatre Beckett Festival, Stanford took the role of Pozzo in Waiting for Godot and Hamm in Endgame. He later gave those same performances again in New York, Toronto, Melbourne, London, Beijing and Shanghai.
Behind the camera
With writer Gavin Kostick, Stanford had earlier co-adapted The Picture of Dorian Gray for the stage, and he also wrote a screenplay of it.
