Plot summary
A tribe of Minions apart from the ones who later serve Gru roams the world looking for villains to follow, and their masters seldom last. James draws constantly and dreams of telling stories; he is closest to Henry, who cheers him on, and Ed, who communicates in sign language. A bank robbery they chase leads them to a 1927 Hollywood film shoot, and studio executives Frank and Elwood Bright are delighted by the mayhem. Filmmaker Max hires the tribe for his movies, and silent stardom follows, until talking pictures arrive. The Minions cannot be understood, the failed material costs the studio millions, and they are let go. James wants to make a monster movie instead of giving up.

- George Lucas's cameo came together after producer Chris Renaud texted Lucas's wife directly to arrange it, and Lucas then recorded his brief 15-minute cameo during a visit to the studio in France.
- A clown Minion gag was reanimated before release after executive producer Chris Renaud asked that a suggestive shot of a red clown nose falling between the character's legs be changed, so director Pierre Coffin had the nose bounce back into the Minion's face instead.
- Character designer François Launet based the film's Lovecraftian monsters on his own 2003 webseries “Goomi’s Unspeakable Vault of Doom,” comparing Goomi, Howard and Phillips directly to that webseries's Cthulhoo, Nyarly and Dagoon.
- Several of the film's musical cues recall the music of Hollywood's Golden Age, referencing scores by Carl Stalling (Looney Tunes), Bernard Herrmann (Psycho), Franz Waxman (Bride of Frankenstein) and Max Steiner (King Kong).
- The film's weaker-than-expected opening was blamed on America 250 celebrations pulling away moviegoers, direct competition from Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 5, and general fatigue with the Despicable Me franchise.
