Clarence Kolb

Biography

Clarence Kolb was an American actor and vaudeville performer whose comedy routines used a Dutch dialect. He started out as one half of the team Kolb and Dill, formed with Max Dill and modeled on Weber and Fields. Together they made a feature-length movie and a series of short films in 1917, after which Kolb returned to vaudeville and stayed away from the movies until the late 1930s. He left the act in 1935 and went into films as a character actor, appearing in 75 of them, usually cast as a businessman. He was best remembered for two parts, the flustered father in the comedy Merrily We Live (1938) and the corrupt mayor in His Girl Friday (1940). On television, his best-known part was Mr. Honeywell in My Little Margie (1952). His final film appearance was as himself in Man of a Thousand Faces (1957).
