Plot summary
A brilliant lawyer, John Prentice gives his work more attention than his wife, Evelyn. When a case keeps him from a dinner party, Evelyn and their guests move on to a nightclub, where a poet named Lawrence Kennard introduces himself and she turns him away. Books from him arrive, and a flirtation begins. John wins an acquittal for Nancy Harrison, and when his business takes him to Boston, Nancy follows and makes advances. A watch arrives with a note that it was left in her husband's drawing room on the train, and she concludes he has been unfaithful. She ends the flirtation once she realizes she still loves John. Kennard then tries to blackmail her with the letters she wrote him.
