Lou Reed
Biography
Lou Reed was an American musician and songwriter who played guitar, sang lead, and wrote most of the Velvet Underground's songs before starting a solo career. He started as a pop songwriter for Pickwick Records in 1964, then formed the Velvet Underground in 1965. Andy Warhol managed the band, and the group later became highly influential. Reed left in 1970. His second solo album, Transformer (1972), produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson, brought mainstream recognition. Berlin reached No. 7 on the UK Albums Chart. He reached a critical and commercial peak with New York (1989). He reunited the Velvet Underground in the 1990s, collaborated with John Cale on Songs for Drella, and made a cameo in Prozac Nation (2001). He entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Velvet Underground in 1996 and again as a solo artist in 2015. He died in 2013.

First role
Reed played guitar and sang backup on the Jades' first recording, a doo-wop trio. An enthusiastic crowd at a 1958 talent show at Freeport Junior High School led to the single "So Blue" / "Leave Her for Me", which a substitute DJ spun on Murray the K's radio show, giving Reed his first airplay.
Getting ready for a role
For the Pickwick single "The Ostrich", Reed tuned each guitar string to one note, a drone effect that John Cale and Tony Conrad, who played on the recording, began calling "ostrich guitar" tuning.
A first
Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" was his only entry on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 16, and came from a commission for a theatrical adaptation of Nelson Algren's novel that never materialized.

Reed's live album Rock 'n' Roll Animal came out in 1974 and featured Velvet Underground songs. It soon became his biggest selling album, reaching gold status in 1978 with 500,000 certified sales.
