Plot summary
Rachel Clifford is a dentist in Britain whose marriage to Simon has ended. She takes on extra work at a prison to fill her time. One of the men she treats there is Philip Chaney, an inmate who has served most of a ten-year sentence and will not say what he did. When he is let out to attend a college class, she passes him in the street. The two get to know each other, and what begins as friendship becomes a relationship they keep hidden.
