Plot summary

In suburban Austin, Max is a lonely ten-year-old. He keeps a journal about the world he dreams up, Planet Drool, which is home to his own creations, among them two superheroes, Sharkboy and Lavagirl. At school he has Linus, a classmate who bullies him, and at home his parents' marriage is in trouble. Only one classmate, Marissa, is friendly to him. Linus takes the journal and damages it. Sharkboy and Lavagirl then appear in Max's classroom and invite him to their planet. There they tell him that Mr. Electric, the planet's crooked electrician, is spreading darkness through the dream world. Mr. Electric is based on Mr. Electricidad, a teacher Max knows. Max agrees to help them repair Planet Drool.

  • Wrestler Dean Roll, who trademarked the name "Shark Boy" in 1999, sued Miramax Films on June 8, 2005, claiming his trademark had been infringed and demanding any money and profits wrongfully gained; the suit was settled in April 2007 for an undisclosed amount.
  • Miley Cyrus auditioned for the film with Taylor Lautner, and the choice came down to her and another girl; when Cyrus began production on Hannah Montana, the other girl, presumably Taylor Dooley, got the role.
  • Taylor Lautner's martial arts skills helped him win the role of Sharkboy: he was the first to audition for the film and Robert Rodriguez chose him immediately, then asked him to choreograph his own fight scenes.
  • The film's concepts and much of its story were conceived by director Robert Rodriguez's own children, most notably his son Racer Max.
