Plot summary

In 1913, John Clayton, known as Tarzan and something of a celebrity, is preparing to marry Jane Porter. Before the wedding a warning reaches him that the African homeland of his childhood is in peril. Nigel Ravens, an educated explorer and treasure seeker, hunts the legendary city of Opar, meaning to take its ancient treasures and uncover dangerous powers, and his men have ransacked the village of the shaman Mugambe and desecrated the burial grounds of the villagers while looking for a key to the city. Jane is distressed and confused when Clayton leaves for Africa. He meets Mugambe and appeals to Ravens to give up the hunt.
