Plot summary
In New York in 1868, Jo March teaches and writes short stories, and an editor, Mr. Dashwood, agrees to publish one. Her sister Amy is in Paris with their Aunt March, where Amy grows angry at Laurie's drunken behavior. Word that Beth is ill sends Jo home to Concord, Massachusetts. Seven years before that, in 1861, Jo met Laurie at a party, and the March girls gave their Christmas breakfast to a poor neighbor family. Their neighbor Mr. Laurence sent food in return. The girls' mother, Marmee, read them a letter from their father, away fighting in the Civil War. Jo reads to Aunt March, hoping for an invitation to Europe, while a jealous Amy sets Jo's unpublished novel on fire. Mr. Laurence opens his house so Beth can play his piano.

- Greta Gerwig began editing the day after the shoot wrapped in December 2018, and she screened the film for Sony Pictures executives on March 10, 2019, three days before giving birth to her son.
