George Mathews
Biography
George Mathews was an American actor. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he entered show business during the Great Depression as the manager of an Italian stock theater company, a job he took with no Italian and no stage management experience. When the actor playing a good cop fell ill, Mathews replaced him, and the impresario kept him in the part, which started his acting career. He played heavies or hardened military men, appearing as Sergeant Ruby in both the stage and film versions of The Eve of St. Mark. In Pat and Mike (1952) he was a comic thug. His television work included a 1956 installment of The Phil Silvers Show, where he was a brutish sergeant nicknamed The Beast, the 1963 comedy series Glynis as ex-cop Chick Rogers, and the bully Harvey in The Honeymooners episode The Bensonhurst Bomber. On Broadway he appeared in Do Re Mi (1960 to 1962) and Catch Me If You Can (1965).
