Plot summary
Pete Williams, a World War II airman, is angry and uncooperative at a veterans' hospital in Galveston, Texas, where Nurse Ripley is his sole friend. She helps him find his old B-17 crew's pilot, John "Eagle Eye" Pennell. Eagle's fading memory has cost him his driver's license, and his son John and John's wife Hilary threaten to send him to a retirement home, though his grandson Taylor resists. A letter from Pete reminds Eagle of the pact the crew made in 1944, and he takes his late wife's 1958 Ford Fairlane to find the surviving members. On the road he meets Romy, a young, gun-toting desperado escaping her abusive partner, Joe Scanlin, with his ill-gotten money.
