Plot summary
Nikita, twenty years old and a drug addict, goes along with a holdup at a pharmacy run by the family of a friend. The job turns into a shootout with the police, the other robbers are killed, and she shoots an officer. Convicted of murder and given life in prison, she is written off as dead: officials stage her suicide and take her away. She wakes in a plain room, where a well-dressed man named Bob tells her she now belongs to a shadowy agency called the Centre, and offers a choice between becoming an assassin and the fake grave that carries her name. She holds out, then agrees, and trains in computers, martial arts and weapons while a trainer teaches her to pass as a woman at ease in any company.

- Luc Besson and Anne Parillaud, then a couple with a young daughter, lived apart while making Nikita: one stayed home with the child while the other stayed in a hotel, switching every couple of weeks.
- Jean Bouise's part in the film was his last role: he died a year before La Femme Nikita came out, and the film is dedicated to his memory.
- On the strength of Besson's earlier hit The Big Blue, Gaumont agreed to put up the money for Nikita without ever having seen a script.
