Plot summary
L'Alpagueur is a head hunter in the unofficial service of the French government, a mercenary and a marginal, in an arrangement invented by a senior official as a way past the routine of ordinary police work. The name he goes by comes from a slang verb that means catching or arresting someone. His earlier trade is deer hunting, and his real name is Roger Pilard. He is paid by the police with money stolen from criminals. The case he is given is L'Epervier, a bank robber and assassin who kills the people who witness his crimes. L'Epervier pays a young and naive man to help him in a hold-up, then kills him straight afterward.
