Plot summary
Commissaire Pierre Niemans is called to an isolated abbey in Lorraine, near the German border, where a body has been found walled inside. Detective Reda is already working a case of his own: a confused man he picked up on the street was attacked by someone dressed as a monk. The two inquiries meet, and the officers join Marie, a specialist in religious matters. The victims they are tracing are crucified, and the killings appear to copy the deaths of the Apostles, a pattern meant to bring about the end of the world. Niemans, Reda and Marie look for the secretive group of monks at the center of the murders.
