Plot summary
After serving in the Algerian War, Jacques Mesrine returns to France and lives in his parents' home. The neon glamor and easy money of 1960s Paris pull him away from that household. A man named Guido mentors him, and Mesrine leaves the law-abiding middle-class life he was raised in and takes up crime. He rises through the criminal world, and Jeanne Schneider, who is as reckless as he is, joins him there.

- Producer Thomas Langmann offered Vincent Cassel the role of Jacques Mesrine as early as 2001, when only a single film was planned. Cassel was drawn to the idea but turned it down, finding the screenplay too black-and-white.
- While Vincent Cassel had stepped away from the project, Benoît Magimel and Vincent Elbaz were considered to play Jacques Mesrine. After Magimel turned it down, his agent François Samuelson and producer Thomas Langmann had an altercation in 2004.
- Marion Cotillard and Eva Green were at one point announced for the parts of Mesrine's companions. Alain Delon was considered for Guido, Jean-Pierre Cassel for Mesrine's father, and Clovis Cornillac and Samy Naceri for Charlie Bauer.
- Vincent Cassel had put on weight to play Jacques Mesrine, so the film was shot in reverse chronological order, letting him lose the kilos gradually as the shoot went on.
