Plot summary
In a Bergen research facility, Dr. Jorgen Asbjornsen finds a way to shrink organic material, and he becomes one of the first people to stand about five inches tall. Five years later he is presented at a conference, and the procedure is taken up around the world. In Omaha, Paul Safranek works as an occupational therapist; years on, he is married to Audrey and their mortgage application is refused. At a high school reunion, Dave and Carol Johnson describe how well they live in Leisureland after downsizing, and at a Leisureland seminar Jeff and Laura Lonowski point out how little an expensive item costs there. Paul and Audrey decide to go through with it.

- Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor spent two and a half years writing Downsizing during the seven-year gap between Sideways and The Descendants. It was meant to be Payne's film straight after Sideways, but was pushed aside twice, first by The Descendants and then by Nebraska.
- A completely different cast was once lined up. Reese Witherspoon joined in 2009 alongside Paul Giamatti and Sacha Baron Cohen, and the role Giamatti was to play eventually went to Matt Damon in November 2014.
- Witherspoon stayed with the project into 2015 and would have worked with Payne for the first time since Election in 1999, but in March 2016 Kristen Wiig replaced her as the wife of Damon's character.
