Plot summary
The Shred is a dementia-like toxin that wipes memory, and it has poisoned the air outside. A mother and her children have sealed themselves inside a glass building she calls the Sanctuary to keep it out. With her are Bee, who is romantic, Evie, who is sensible, Daisy, a child of nature, and one son. People the toxin has already emptied wander beyond the panes. Fear of that fate keeps them behind the glass. To hold on to who they were, the family performs sacred rituals together. No one comes in. Bee brings a wounded stranger through the door anyway, and the household's rules give way.
