Plot summary
In a near future, Jake and Kyra raise their adopted daughter Mika alongside Yang, a robotic teenage boy the couple bought as a culture unit so that Mika could stay in touch with her Chinese heritage. After a family dance competition, Yang goes unresponsive. He came from a reseller called Second Siblings rather than his original manufacturer, so no warranty covers him now. Jake's tea shop is struggling, and a repair store called Quick Fix finds that Yang's computing core has failed and must be replaced before the body begins to decompose, at the cost of an entirely new unit. Mika is distraught, so Jake sets out to save Yang, while Kyra suggests that grief might be something Mika needs to experience.
