Plot summary
At the Sleeptite Pajama Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Myron Hasler brings Sid Sorokin in from out of town as the new factory superintendent. On the floor, the union is asking for a wage increase of 7½ cents per hour to bring pay in line with the rest of the industry, and Hasler will not agree to it. Sid has to deal with Prez, who heads the union, and with Babe Williams, who chairs its grievance committee and knows how far to push each claim. Beyond the bargaining, Sid and Babe feel an attraction, and he is readier to admit it than she is. Vernon Hines, the factory timekeeper, drives Gladys Hotchkiss away with his jealousy. Hasler blames the board of directors, which would have to approve the raise.
