Plot summary
Katie is seventeen and waits tables in a hamlet in 1980s rural Arizona, living in a trailer with her mother Tracey, who does not work and depends on Katie for the bills. To escape poverty and save for a plan to move to San Francisco, Katie takes money from truckers, among them an older man named Bear. She befriends Bruno, a local mechanic and ex-convict, and the two begin a relationship; when he finds out how she earns her extra money, she agrees to stop. Katie works at a diner, where Maybelle is her boss, and her reputation in town has already spread.
