Plot summary
Tom Harris works for the CIA as a freelance operative, slipping into Iran as a technician with a Swiss communications firm while he plants malware inside a secret nuclear research site. Iranian intelligence holds British journalist Luna Cujai, who has evidence of the agency's sabotage. When Harris's cover is blown, he flies out through Dubai and takes a contract from his handler Roman Chalmers in Herat, Afghanistan. A leak names him there, the job is called off, and Chalmers directs him and his Afghan-American translator Mohammad Doud toward an extraction point in Kandahar. Iranian agents under Colonel Farzad Asadi and Pakistani intelligence both send people after him, Pakistan hoping to ransom him. The two are pursued by Farzad and by the ISI agent Kahil Nasir and break away into the desert.
