Plot summary
Pete Kapahala's job transfer takes the family from Hawaii to Vermont. His son Johnny, thirteen, is a surfer who leaves behind his grandfather, the surf legend Johnny Tsunami. In the new town, Skyline Academy's private-school students ski and call themselves Skies, while Maple Valley's public-school students snowboard and are called Urchins. Johnny attends Skyline but thinks snowboarding is more like surfing. He becomes friends with Emily, the headmaster's daughter, and with Sam Sterling, who helps him learn to snowboard. Brett, a skier who also likes Emily, does not think Johnny is a good match for her. The Urchins use the skiers' part of the mountain, and the two groups face off.
