Going to the Mat (2004) on Netflix

Plot summary

Jace Newfield and his family move from New York City to Salt Lake City, where he enrolls at a new high school as its blind student. He believes that playing the drums is his route to fitting in, so he performs in class, and he learns that the band teacher, Mr. Wyatt, cannot see either. His friend Vincent "Fly" Shu tells him that athletes are the ones who belong. Mary Beth Rice, another friend, is worn down by his jokes that New Yorkers rule and tells him plainly that it is his behavior, not his blindness, that keeps people away. She suggests he try out for the wrestling team, coached by her father, and Fly goes with him. Both are picked for the squad, and Jace has trouble winning matches.
