Plot summary
At Philadelphia Hebrew Academy, Alex Schlotsky and his friends play for the Lions, a basketball team that keeps losing. They want to win the Liberty Tournament and beat their rivals, the Warriors, and they long for a coach of their own, someone like Judah Macabee. Practicing in a park, Alex meets Lamont Carr, a college basketball star whose knee injury cost him a place in the NBA. Lamont is homeless, having left his wife and son back in Virginia, and he hopes the Philadelphia 76ers will sign him. Alex has to persuade him that coaching the boys is worth the time and the little money they can pay him. Alex's mother wants him to become a doctor, and Mrs. Klein, the school principal, wants to be sure the boys are safe with him.
