Plot summary
In 1942 in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Willie Morris is an only child with few friends. Three schoolmates bully him, and his closest companion is the older neighbor Dink Jenkins, the town's baseball hero, who is drafted and sent to Europe. Willie's father Jack, a Spanish Civil War veteran who lost a leg, is gruff and proud; his mother Ellen is talkative and warm. Against Jack's wishes, Ellen buys Willie a Smooth Fox Terrier puppy for his ninth birthday, and Willie names him Skip. Boy and dog become constant companions, and Skip's presence draws other children toward Willie, among them Rivers Applewhite, the girl he has a crush on.

- Willie Morris, the author of the book, suffered a heart attack right after the film was completed in 1999. He had seen a preliminary screening in New York and praised it as "an absolute classic", but died a couple of days later, never seeing the final version, to which the film is dedicated.
- The film ended up grossing $34 million in the United States and Canada and $35.8 million worldwide, recouping its $7 million budget, and was Warner Bros.' first family film to be a success since Space Jam in 1996.
- The film was ranked at number four of Variety's "dollar for dollar" most profitable films of the year 2000, a measure of return set against budget.
