Gerard Parkes
Biography
Gerard Parkes was an Irish-Canadian actor whose work took in film, radio, television and the stage. Born in Dublin, he settled in Toronto in 1956 and began in CBC radio in 1959, later moving into television and film with parts in The Forest Rangers, The Littlest Hobo and Cagney and Lacey. His Uncle Matthew in Isabel brought him Canada's first film acting prize in 1968, the Etrog, later renamed the Gemini, and in 1983 he took the Andrew Allan Award as best radio actor; a Dora Mavor Moore Award for his featured role in Kilt followed in 1999. He was best known as Doc in Fraggle Rock, and he also worked in children's television on Today's Special and Shining Time Station. His films included Short Circuit 2 (1988), It Takes Two (1995) and The Boondock Saints (1999), in which he played a bartender, a part he returned to in The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009).

Behind the award
Parkes won the first Canadian film award in 1968 for playing Uncle Matthew in Isabel. At the time the prize was called the Etrog, and it is now the Gemini.

Parkes was wrapping up a regular part on the Canadian TV series Home Fires, playing Dr. Arthur Lowe, when he took the role of Doc in Fraggle Rock.
