John Elliott
Biography
John Elliott was an American actor who moved from the stage to more than 300 films, among them a long run of B westerns. Born in Keosauqua, Iowa, he reached Broadway in 1917 as Robert Goring in the play Eyes of Youth, and made his screen debut two years later in the silent film When a Man Loves. Work was sporadic in the silent era, but sound brought steady employment for a quarter of a century. He played heroes and villains alike, and was cast as General Robert E. Lee in Only the Brave (1930) and later films. His credits include a small part in Orson Welles's The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), a workman in Jean Renoir's The Woman on the Beach (1947), and his last feature role, a minister in George Cukor's The Marrying Kind. He died in 1956.
