Plot summary
Ballywood, an Irish village deep in debt, is almost entirely owned by Lord Hailstock, who inherited the land and has foreclosed on Finnigan's Pub. The residents, most of them employed by him, plan an international poetry contest: five dollars an entry, and the winner receives the deed to the pub. In South Central Los Angeles, James McDevitt, known as Jimmy Da Jam, dodges creditors, break-dances for spare change, loses his apartment and is attacked by the ex-fiancée he left at the wedding altar. A newspaper notice about the contest gives him an idea. He enters with a poem lifted from a rap song by Dirty Dime, aiming at Ballywood, where Maureen Duffy sings at the pub and her mute daughter Kathleen lives.
