Mary Boland

Biography

Mary Boland was an American stage and film actress who, born in Philadelphia to a repertory actor father and raised largely in Detroit, left school before she was sixteen and was already performing on stage. She began with a stock company in 1901 and made her Broadway debut in 1907 in The Ranger, later serving as John Drew's leading lady. She first appeared on screen for Triangle Studios in 1915, made nine silent films, then returned to the stage, winning fame as a comedian in The Cradle Snatchers (1925). After signing with Paramount in 1931 she became one of the decade's most popular character actresses, often in comedies opposite Charles Ruggles and in Ruggles of Red Gap (1935), and was best known for Countess DeLave in The Women (1939) and Mrs. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice (1940). Her later work mixed film, stage and television, including Nothing but Trouble (1944) and the 1935 Cole Porter musical Jubilee.
