Biography

Richard Bennett was an American actor who began on the stage and later became a character actor in sound films. Born in Indiana, he made his stage debut in Chicago in 1891 with The Limited Mail and first appeared on Broadway in His Excellency the Governor in 1899. He gained fame in 1905 playing Hector Malone, Jr. in Man and Superman by Shaw. He then appeared as Jefferson Ryder in The Lion and the Mouse, and in 1908 played John Shand opposite Maude Adams in What Every Woman Knows. He adapted works by Eugène Brieux and starred in and co-produced the stage drama Damaged Goods in 1913, reprising the role for his film debut in Damaged Goods (1914). Later screen roles included John Glidden in If I Had a Million (1932) and Major Amberson in The Magnificent Ambersons (1942). His final film was Journey into Fear (1943). He died in 1944.
