Biography
May Robson was an Australian-born actress whose career began on the stage in 1883 and later included dozens of films in the 1930s. Born in Moama, New South Wales, she spent decades as a stage comedian and character actress and established her own touring company in 1911. She had silent film appearances as early as 1903 or 1904, then moved to Hollywood in 1927, where she took senior and comedic roles. Her films included If I Had a Million (1932), Lady for a Day (1933), Anna Karenina (1935), A Star Is Born (1937), Bringing Up Baby (1938), and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938). She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for Lady for a Day, becoming the first Australian nominated for an acting Oscar. Her final film was Joan of Paris in 1942, the year she died.

Robson began acting on 17 September 1883 in Hoop of Gold at the Brooklyn Grand Opera House. The billing misspelled her name as Robson, and she kept it from then on for good luck.
