Trailer

Plot summary

Four teenagers drive away from their rural Texas prom. Heather found Barry with another girl, and Barry follows her to explain, while Jenny and Sean are hidden in the backseat. A detour ends in a collision with another car, and the other driver is knocked out. Heather, Barry and Jenny leave Sean to watch over him and set off for help. They find a trailer office belonging to Darla, who works in insurance, and she offers to call Vilmer Slaughter, the tow truck driver she is seeing. Back at the wreck, Heather and Barry lose track of Jenny in the dark. Vilmer turns up at the crash site, and Heather and Barry come upon an old farmhouse in the woods.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • McConaughey so frightened the production casting secretary who read lines with him at his audition that Henkel felt compelled to cast him. "I ran to the kitchen... grabbed a big tablespoon, came back in and just pinned her in a corner and acted like it was a weapon," he recounted. "I did it until she cried."
  • Zellweger recalled in a 2016 interview that the shoot was so low-budget the cast shared a tiny Winnebago that belonged to the producer: makeup was in the front seats, a table in the middle was for hair, and a tiny curtain by the bathroom was where you put on your prom dress.
  • Production designer Deborah Pastor dressed the empty home with leftover bones donated by a local taxidermy shop, and also acquired a prop chair crafted with bones that had been used in the original 1974 film, again used for the Grandpa character in the dinner sequence.
  • In late 1997 Grigson, joined by Ultra Muchos and River City Films, sued McConaughey and his management company, Creative Artists Agency, alleging that they had interfered with Columbia TriStar's distribution agreement by pressuring the studio to limit its release.
  • The character of Darla was loosely based on a woman who was sentenced to death for murdering two people with a pickaxe during a 1983 burglary in Houston.
  • Marilyn Burns, who played Sally Hardesty in the 1974 original, returned for a cameo as a patient on a gurney, but was credited as "anonymous" because of her membership with SAG.
  • In a franchise named after the weapon, and unlike the previous films in it, none of the characters in The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre die by a chainsaw.
  • Kim Henkel, who wrote the original film, was at first reluctant to direct this one. He said he was comfortable working with the cast, but that producer Bob Kuhn bullied him into directing.
