Plot summary
Arthur Blake, condemned for murder and grave robbery, denies the murder but admits to robbing graves, and tells his story to Father Duffy, who wants a statement for use as a cautionary tale. After his father died, Arthur needed work to support his family and became apprentice to Willie Grimes, learning to take corpses from graves and from wakes. Their trade is hampered by Doctor Quint, who blackmails them into supplying him bodies for free under threat of telling the police. Their work shifts when a body they dig up at a crossroads was buried with a garlic wreath and a stake through its chest, and Arthur takes the precautions off over Willie's protests.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Shooting took place in Staten Island, New York City, and production was halted for five months while co-star Perlman starred in Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
- Scrimm was cast when McQuaid met him on the set of another Fessenden project. When Scrimm mentioned to Fessenden's son that he could play the violin, McQuaid added a scene to the film purely to showcase this talent.
- The film was based on McQuaid's 2005 short film The Resurrection Apprentice, which also starred Fessenden. After a muted response to the more serious and dramatic tone of the short, McQuaid reworked the idea to be more comedic.
- Perlman had worked with McQuaid and Fessenden previously on The Last Winter, and his role here was expanded after he pointed out that it was light.
