Plot summary
Beth falls asleep while Zakes drives the M1 at night, the two of them having argued about their strained relationship. A truck overtakes, and its tailgate slides up far enough for Zakes to glimpse a woman held in a cage, naked and bloodied, calling for help. He telephones the police, but the truck's number plate is covered in dirt. Zakes follows and gets a photograph with Beth's phone by reaching under the tailgate, though he then loses the truck. At a service station Beth breaks up with him and says she will get home by herself. Zakes watches the truck pull in and a hooded man walk inside, and when he returns Beth is gone.
