Plot summary
Nancy Adams, a senior medical student, takes a trip to a remote beach in Mexico that her mother once visited. Carlos, a local, drives her there; the friend who was to come along stayed at the hotel. Nancy paddles out with two local surfers, then video-chats her sister Chloe and speaks with her father, who is worried about her grief and her thought of leaving medical school before she graduates. On a last run she spots the carcass of a humpback whale. A great white shark knocks her off her board and bites her leg, and she makes it to a lone rock, where she uses the leash of her surfboard as a tourniquet to slow the bleeding.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Shallows (2016)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Stunt doubles Kelly Richardson and Isabella Nichols handled the action and surfing scenes, but Blake Lively performed some stunts herself, including a scene where her character breaks her nose and Lively suffered an actual injury.
- Much of The Shallows was shot in a tank against bluescreens; director Jaume Collet-Serra estimated only 10% of the film was shot on location, saying: "Every scene has one shot that is real, and the other 99% is not - but the one real shot tricks you".
- Producers Matti Leshem and Lynn Harris were "horrified" at plans to use CGI or a puppet for Steven Seagull and wanted a real bird; while scouting in Australia, Blake Lively fed a group of seagulls, proving they could be trained for production.
- The Shallows was originally going to be filmed on the Gulf Coast of the United States near Galveston, but the filmmakers were denied a film permit for safety reasons.
- Blake Lively took the role partly because her husband Ryan Reynolds had starred in the similarly minimalist Buried, saying it was "one of the reasons why I wanted to take on this movie so much" because she knew how tough and how rewarding it was for him.
