Plot summary
Saya has hunted vampires for four hundred years. She is the daughter of a human father and a vampire mother, and Kato raised her. She works only loosely with the Council, a secret society that has hunted vampires for centuries. In 1970 she goes undercover at Kanto High School, on an American air base in Tokyo. Onigen, the oldest vampire, killed her father, and Saya wants revenge. At the school she steps in when a classmate, Alice McKee, is threatened.

- South Korean actress Jun Ji-hyun, who adopted the English screen name Gianna Jun for the release, plays the role of the vampire hunter Saya.
- Rather than being paid a straight license for the rights, the anime house Production I.G will receive a percentage of all revenues generated by the film.
- Early announcements said the film would be set in 1948 at a United States Army camp in Tokyo during the American occupation of Japan, but during production it was shifted to the 1970s instead, the original setting for the anime.
- Originally slated to be released worldwide in spring 2008, the film did not premiere in Japan until 29 May 2009, and it reached the United Kingdom on 26 June 2009.
