Plot summary
Until stage fright took hold of him, Tom Selznick was a concert pianist on the rise. Now he is set to play again in Chicago, at a concert dedicated to his late mentor, the pianist and composer Patrick Godureaux, who wrote La Cinquette. Emma, his wife, an actress and singer, urged him back to the stage. At the theater, his friend Norman, the conductor that evening, tells him he will do well. An usher hands him a folder of sheet music, which holds the manuscript of La Cinquette; he throws it away. At the piano he finds a note on his score warning that a single wrong note will kill him. More notes threaten Emma, and a laser dot tracks his movement.
