Plot summary
Dovidl Rapoport, a nine-year-old violin prodigy from Poland, is brought to England by his father so that he can take lessons, and the Simmonds family in London gives him a home because his father has to go back to Warsaw. Their son Martin bonds with the new arrival, whom he thinks of as a brother, and likes to hear him play. The household calls him David. He keeps up his practicing and remembers his family. Years pass, both reach twenty-one, and a concert featuring Dovidl is a day away when he leaves with his violin and does not come back.
