Plot summary
Tom Lane is the star columnist at the San Francisco Sun, a paper owned by a media conglomerate whose owners are considering a television show built around him. Liz Madison writes the advice column at the Marin County Voice, a small community paper. Both are single, and their friends and families keep trying to pair them off. On November 2, the staff of the Voice learn that the Sun's ownership has bought their paper, apparently to fold it into the Sun, which would cost them their jobs. Liz decides to change her column into an editorial about the meaning of Christmas and the Voice's place in the community.
