Plot summary
Arnold and Gerald spend the summer after fifth grade trying to win a trip to San Lorenzo, the Central American country where Arnold's parents, Miles and Stella, were last seen. Their humanitarian video goes wrong when the neighborhood's homeless residents claim the junk they are building with, so Helga, who has long had a crush on Arnold she keeps to herself, turns in footage of his good deeds instead, and the entry wins. Arnold, his classmates, and Helga's sister Olga fly to San Lorenzo, where Eduardo, a friend of Arnold's parents, gives Arnold an amulet he says will point the way to the Green-Eyed People and their lost city. Abner, Arnold's pet pig, has stowed away in his backpack.
