Hurd Hatfield
Biography
Hurd Hatfield was an American actor who was born in New York City and studied at Columbia University before moving to London, where he trained in drama and began working in theater. He made his film debut in Dragon Seed (1944) and became a star with The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), playing Oscar Wilde's ageless anti-hero to widespread acclaim. His follow-up films The Diary of a Chambermaid (1946), The Beginning or the End (1947), and The Unsuspected (1947) were successful, and he later took supporting roles in The Left Handed Gun (1958), King of Kings (1961), El Cid (1961), and The Boston Strangler (1968). After his film career lost momentum in the 1950s, he returned to the stage, and he appeared frequently on television, earning an Emmy Award nomination for The Invincible Mr. Disraeli (1963). His later films included King David (1985) and Her Alibi (1989).
