George Murcell

Biography

George Murcell was a British character actor who was born in Italy and entered films with The Battle of the River Plate in 1956. He went on to specialize in snarling villains, both stupid, brutish henchmen in Hell Drivers (1957) and Campbell's Kingdom (1957) and smoother rogues such as Needle in an episode of The Avengers. Foreign parts, among them Germans, Russians and South Americans, came his way too, and he appeared in 1960s and 1970s ITC adventure shows including Danger Man, The Saint and The Persuaders! His film credits also took in Sea of Sand (1958), The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964), The Assassination Bureau (1969), Penny Gold (1973) and Year of the Gun (1991). He also spent years on the stage, working alongside Tyrone Guthrie and Peter Brook, and acted with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
