Peggy Cummins
Biography
Peggy Cummins was an Irish actress who was born in Prestatyn, Wales, and grew up mainly in Dublin, where she studied at the Abbey School of Ballet and appeared as a child at the Gate Theatre. She made her London stage debut in Let's Pretend on her thirteenth birthday, which led to the film Dr. O'Dowd (1940). After her first major film, English Without Tears (1944), Darryl F. Zanuck brought her to Hollywood, where she had a lead in Moss Rose (1947) and appeared in The Late George Apley (1947) and Escape (1948). Her best-known role was the trigger-happy bank robber in Joseph H. Lewis's Gun Crazy (1950), later chosen for the National Film Registry. She went on to star in Night of the Demon (1957) and Hell Drivers (1957), and her last film was In the Doghouse (1961). In 2020 The Irish Times placed her sixteenth among Ireland's greatest film actors.

A role that slipped away
Peggy Cummins was considered for Amber in Forever Amber, but because she was considered too young, Linda Darnell soon replaced her.
First role
Peggy Cummins first took the London stage as Maryann, the juvenile lead in the children's revue Let's Pretend. That show began at the St James's Theatre on the day she turned 13.
Big break
In October 1945, Darryl F. Zanuck, who was head of 20th Century-Fox, brought Cummins to Hollywood. It is widely believed that she came to play Amber in Kathleen Winsor's Forever Amber, but that was not initially her purpose.
