Wilfrid Lawson
Biography
Wilfrid Lawson was an English character actor who worked on stage in Britain and America and appeared in films on both sides of the Atlantic. Born in Bradford, he began acting as a teenager and made his screen debut in East Lynne on the Western Front (1931), taking supporting parts before a lead in The Terror (1938). His most celebrated role was Alfred P. Doolittle, the dustman turned lecturer, in Pygmalion (1938) alongside Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller. Other leads followed in Pastor Hall (1940), Tower of Terror (1941) and The Great Mr. Handel (1942), and he appeared in American films such as John Ford's The Long Voyage Home (1940) with John Wayne. His last leading part came in The Turners of Prospect Road (1947); later roles included War and Peace (1956), Hell Drivers (1957), Tom Jones (1963) and The Wrong Box (1966). He died in 1966.
