Bodil Rosing
Biography
Bodil Rosing was a Danish American actress whose career covered stage and screen from the silent era through the early sound period. Born in Copenhagen, she trained at the Royal Danish Theatre in the 1890s and performed there for three years. She made her stage debut in 1898 in Gurli at the Dagmar Theatre and played Bianca in The Taming of the Shrew in 1904. After a Broadway appearance in Fools Errant (1922), she moved to Hollywood in 1924 and was cast in Pretty Ladies (1925). Under contract at MGM, she often played matronly characters such as servants, housekeepers, cooks, and mothers. Her most notable role was probably Janet Gaynor's maid in F. W. Murnau's Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927). In sound films she frequently portrayed foreign characters, including Jean Hersholt's wife in The Painted Veil (1934) and Lionel Barrymore's German neighbor in Frank Capra's You Can't Take It with You (1938).
