David Manners
Biography
David Manners was a Canadian-American actor who began on the stage before becoming a romantic leading man in early Hollywood. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, he studied forestry at the University of Toronto but was drawn to campus drama, making his debut there in 1924, and he went on to tour and appear on Broadway, including opposite Helen Hayes in Dancing Mothers. After moving to California around 1927, he was spotted by director James Whale and soon played leads, earning praise from critics for Journey's End. His best remembered part was Jonathan Harker in Dracula (1931) opposite Bela Lugosi, and he followed it with The Mummy (1932). He also appeared in A Bill of Divorcement (1932). Bored with Hollywood, he left films after 1936, though he continued acting on stage until 1953. He died in 1998.

Early training
Manners trained under Eva Le Gallienne in New York, even though she had called him "a very bad actor" after seeing one of his performances.

In 1933, Manners was one of the first actors to join the newly formed Screen Actors Guild, which was still a fledgling organization at the time.
